Into Thin Air was published in 1997 by journalist and outdoorsman Jon Krakauer. The book focuses on the events surrounding the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, of which the author was a survivor.
In 1996, New Zealander mountaineering expert Robert Hall led a commercial expedition to climb the mountain. Krakauer joined this expedition while on assignment for Outside magazine. That same climbing season, American, Norwegian, South African, and Taiwanese expeditions also attempted to climb Mount Everest, the world's highest peak.
On May 10, 1996, a rogue storm hit Mount Everest as the members of several climbing expeditions descended from the summit. By the end of May 11, eight people were dead. It was the deadliest single incident in the mountain's history up to that time....

In 1966, eight mountain climbers died when a rogue storm at the top of Mount Everest trapped them in the ‘dead zone,’ causing the deadliest single incident in the mountain’s history to that date. Jon Krakauer, on assignment from Outside magazine to cover one of the groups making the ascent, survived the incident, and wrote a memoir about it. Summary of Into Thin Air by Joh Krakauer by Instaread analyzes Krakauer’s book, with brief bios of the main characters involved in the incident and the author’s approach to writing it. This unofficial summary is an objective look at a very subjective, and somewhat controversial, book. An excellent resource for the busy reader who would like to preview before purchase, and highly recommended. Summary of Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer | Includes Analysis (Audible Audio Edition) Instaread Michael Gilboe Books Reviews
Great summary of the Jon Krakauer book. I read his book when it came out in 1999 and I was enthralled by it. For me, it was a first real look inside a climb up Everest. It was filled with all the dangers, joys, and deaths that come with that climb. It was a real eye opener. I still have the book and I highly recommend it.
I got this Instaread summary as a refresher. I was impressed with the quality of the summary and learned a few more things in the analysis section. I recommend Krakauer's book for reading clubs, and I recommend this summary as a companion guide.
This is an overview of the actual book “Into Thin Air.“ Kind of like an abbreviated Cliff's Notes for the full book. It provides a potential reader enough information regarding this book’s content to determine if we want to invest the extra money and time to actually buy and read the entire book. Based on the author's personal experience(s) ... this non-fiction account describes many of the harrowing, nerve grinding experiences encountered by high altitude mountain climbers. This summary is a good example of why I have personally found “Instaread” to be a very helpful service.
