Age of Discovery explores a world on the brink of a new Renaissance and asks how do we share more widely the benefits of unprecedented progress? How do we endure the inevitable tumult generated by accelerating change? How do we each thrive through this tangled, uncertain time?

From gains in health, education, wealth and technology to crises of conflict, disease and mass migration, the similarities between today's world and that of the 15th century are both striking and prophetic we have been here before. So what must we do to achieve our full potential, individually and altogether, this time around? Will we repeat the glories of the Renaissance, the misery, or both?

In Age of Discovery, Ian Goldin and Chris Kutarna show how we can draw courage, wisdom and inspiration from the days of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci in order to fashion our own Golden Age. Whether we're seized by Gutenberg or Zuckerberg, the discovery of the Americas or the rise of China, copperplate etchings or silicon chips, The Bonfire of the Vanities or the destructive fury of ISIS, the spread of syphilis or the Ebola pandemic, such Renaissance moments force humanity to give its best just when the stakes are at their highest.

Turning the spotlight on the crises of our time, Age of Discovery shows how we can all define and create a lasting legacy that the world will still celebrate 500 years from now.

This would be a five star book for the information provided. There were fascinating details provided for the earlier renaissance ( 1500's in Europe); and some helpful descriptions and explanations of our present day world The premise of the book that the present day is a new renaissance was well presented and moderately convincing. The book should have ended there. The last sections were agonizingly positive and preachy. There are page after page of unrealistic advice. Most of the advice was hardly original and occasionally contradictory. There were long stretches of tedious reading followed by one or two interesting ideas. It was difficult to finish after such a good start.

Age of Discovery Navigating the Risks and Rewards of Our New Renaissance (Audible Audio Edition) Ian Goldin Chris Kutarna Mark Meadows Audible Studios for Bloomsbury Books Reviews

Very clearly written and relevant to our times. I am enjoying reading this book very much.
This book is a must read for anyone wanting to better understand the times we are living through.Viewed with perspective of scholars(easy to read) positioning current times and themes with historical times of a very similar nature. It offers hope but cautions that we are indeed capable of blowing it as well. I've recommended it to at least a dozen people.
Still reading, to date one of the most informative books I have read.
A very optimistic world view that may be seriously unrealistic now that Trump is the next US president.
Seldom does any book take you to the places that Age of Discovery does. Not only can and should we learn from the past, but its insights into our future are astounding. This isn't a book that you'll just read one time or place in your library to collect dust. Like a great musical composition, the more times your read it, the fuller your understanding will be of our potential journey we call life.
Oxford Martin School authored interdisciplinary look at our current historic period? This second Renaissance has the excitement, & benefits beyond the first cultural rebirth. But the risks and unexpected challenges to our being far exceed the first Renaissance. A must read!
In "Age of Discovery", Ian Goldin & Chris Kutarna have given us an engrossing and illuminating account of the connections between the past eras of discovery, the world in which we find ourselves today, and the future towards which, we are hurtling at break-neck speed. A thought-provoking book which will leave us both uneasy, but also hopeful. Much food for thought and discussion.
